Madrid, July 4th, 2024. Borja Ibarra, senior researcher at IMDEA Nanociencia and head of the Molecular Motors Nanomanipulation Lab, is participating this week as an instructor in the BioPhySAL 2025 International Advanced Biophysics and Structural Biology Course. Alongside Rebeca Bocanegra, Ibarra transported and installed an optical tweezers demo setup at the University of Salamanca to deliver hands-on demonstrations for course participants. The course is taking place from June 30th to July 5th, 2025, bringing together top international scientists and students to explore state-of-the-art single-molecule techniques and structural biology tools.
BioPhySAL course features a distinguished panel of instructors, including Richard Henderson, Professor at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge and winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The programme combines advanced lectures with live demonstrations, offering participants an immersive experience in biophysical research methods.
At IMDEA Nanociencia, Borja Ibarra leads pioneering work in the study of molecular motors and the mechanics of biological nanomachines. The Molecular Motors Nanomanipulation Lab (3M Lab) specializes in single-molecule manipulation using dual-beam optical tweezers with nanometer precision and piconewton-level force sensitivity. The group investigates fundamental processes such as DNA replication in mitochondria, membrane dynamics, and viral genome packaging, and is also engaged in the development of artificial molecular machines.
